Disney Plus to offer a cheaper ad-supported plan this year! - Prune
Last year, we saw the top video streaming platforms try to one-up each other by reducing the prices of their plans and increasing benefits for their consumers. And it looks like there's plenty to look forward to this year as well. If you regularly binge-watch web shows and movies on Disney Plus or looking for low-priced options, there's good news for you! The OTT giant will soon bring out a cheaper subscription plan that supports ads. It comes as a big move to take down its strong competitors such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video in the country.
While there's no official announcement about the price or launch date, the subscription plan is likely to be available by the second half of 2022. However, the plan will cost lesser than the existing ad-free version, which costs around Rs 600 per month. It will first be available to the US audience, before expanding its video streaming services to other countries like India.
Here's the official statement made by the chairman of Disney media and entertainment distribution, Kareem Daniel, "Expanding access to Disney Plus to a broader audience at a lower price point is a win for everyone - consumers, advertisers, and our storytellers. More consumers will be able to access our amazing content. Advertisers will be able to reach a wider audience, and our storytellers will be able to share their incredible work with more fans and families."
Disney aims to increase its annual subscribers by offering economical plans to its audience. And it will also introduce its services to over 50 countries by 2023. Along with gaining momentum attracting existing and new users to its competitive plans, this plan will also benefit the advertisers. But it's yet to be seen whether the company will manage to fulfill its goals by its upcoming subscription offering. Not many people prefer ads while watching their favourite movies or web shows, but the low prices might be favoured by some.
As of now, Disney+ Hotstar offers Premium, Super, and Mobile subscription plans in India. The monthly premium plan starts at Rs 299, and the yearly Premium plan costs Rs 1499. There's another subscription plan, called the Super plan, which is priced at Rs 899 per year. The Mobile-specific plans from Disney+ Hotstar start at just Rs 49, and the yearly version costs Rs 499 per year.
